Family law for parents in Asheville

I take a small number of cases at a time, so each one gets the hours it needs. Most of my clients are parents who are separating, and families who are adopting. Here is how to start.

Start with a free call

Twenty minutes on the phone, at no charge. Tell me what is happening and I will tell you what your options are.

Pay over time

Who I am

I am Rosalind Meeks, a family law attorney in Asheville. I began as a guardian ad litem volunteer, sitting with children whose parents were in court, and that is still the work my practice is built around.

Most of my clients are parents who are separating. Some need an agreement they can both sign, some need a court order about custody or support, and some need both. I also handle equitable distribution, domestic violence protective orders, and private and agency adoptions.

If you and your spouse would rather settle than litigate, I work as a collaborative divorce attorney as well.

How I work

Four things stay the same in every case, whether it settles or ends up in front of a judge.

Children first

Where children are involved, the plan starts with their week: school, bedtime, and the adults who look after them day to day.

Plain language

You will not be handed a stack of paper and told to read it. I explain what each document does and what it asks of you.

Costs you can see

You get an estimate before we begin, and payment plans are available if you need one.

One attorney, start to finish

I take your calls and I go to your hearings. You will not be passed to a new face at each step.

Practice areas

Family law only. Everything below is work I do several times a month. If your situation is not on this list, call and I will tell you honestly whether I can help.

Not sure which one you need? Call (828) 555-0122 and we will work it out together.

Services I provide

Four kinds of case come through the door most weeks. Most of them start with the same free phone call.

A house key resting on a stack of papers on a desk

Divorce and separation

The agreement itself, and the money questions that come with it: the house, the retirement account, the debts.

A child's crayon drawing of a house on a kitchen table

Custody and parenting schedules

A plan that says who is where on which day, how holidays are shared, and how it changes when something changes.

Two people talking across a table over an open folder of papers

Collaborative divorce

For couples who want to settle without a courtroom. We work through the terms in meetings, with a neutral professional where it helps.

An adult and a young child walking hand in hand along a leafy path

Adoption

Private and agency adoptions: the paperwork, the home study, the consents, and the court date at the end of it.

The parents I meet are not careless people. They are tired people who have run out of ways to agree. My job is to find them a way through, on terms they can both live with afterwards.

How we work

Five steps, in this order. You will know what each one costs before it starts.

A written plan you keep

You leave the planning session with the next steps written down and an estimate of what the case will cost.

I do the work and keep you posted

I prepare and file the documents, and I contact you when something moves in your case.

Questions people ask first

How much does the first conversation cost?

Nothing. The first call is free and lasts about 20 minutes. We talk about what is happening, what you want to be different, and whether I am the right attorney for it.

What happens after the phone call?

If we decide to keep going, we book a one-hour planning session for $200. You bring any paperwork you already have and we work out the order of the next steps.

Can I pay the fees over time?

Yes. Payment plans are available, and we agree the schedule in writing before any work starts.

Will my case go to court?

Some do and some do not. I handle both, including collaborative divorce for couples who would rather settle in meetings than in front of a judge.
